Now this might seem really dumb, but, when I first started thinking about learning how to build a website, I did not understand quite what website themes were or how they worked.
What I discovered is that website theme is basically the coloured layout or template that gives a website its particular appearance.
What I did notice was that there were hundreds probably millions of incredible looking websites using amazing themes.
One of the great things about using WordPress is that you have access to a huge number and variety of themes for free. These can be found online or in the themes section of your
WordPress site. Many of these themes can be easily customized to give your website its own unique look.
Two of my favourite free themes are the Suffusion Theme and Flexibility 3.
Suffusion is a little tricky to figure out, but there is help on their forum and if you have a question someone usually gets back to you within 24 hours. You can see an example of suffusion in action at http://diyideas.info or on the official site at http://aquoid.com just click on Showcase. Flexibility 3 is much easier to use and is also very customizable.
This is a Flexibility 3 theme http://portable-chickencoop.com. Flexibility 3 is the free version of a really amazing theme called Flexsqueeze. This particular site uses Flexsqueeze and it can be configured to produce a range of amazing looks for your websites.
You can find information on Flexsqueeze here. Click here to visit Advantus Media Inc.. Flexsqueeze is a bit pricey, but well worth it. I didn’t buy it until this year, but I have found it a great theme to work with.
The other thing I like about Flexsqueeze is that the editor comes with some great graphics and tools that you can add to your pages and posts. Ryan has provided buy buttons, content boxes, arrows, badges, testimonial graphics and more. This saves you hunting around for free ones or having to buy then. They are really useful especially if you are building squeeze pages etc.
However I wouldn’t rush out and buy a theme if you are just starting out. Work with the free ones first and even the one that is installed when you first install wordpress can be a decent theme to work with.
Once you have the hang of working with WordPress I am sure you will start to branch out and try other themes. There are some great ones out there.
